The right gymnastics clothing helps kids move freely, stay safe, and feel confident from the moment they walk through the door. Whether your child is brand new to preschool gymnastics or has been working through the recreational gymnastics program for a season, what they wear affects how they move, how they focus, and how much they get out of each class. This guide covers what works, what to avoid, and what Gold Medal Gymnastics & Ninja carries at every location so you can check one more thing off your list before class day.

Why Gymnastics Attire Matters More Than You Might Think
Gymnastics clothing directly affects how safely and effectively kids can train, which is why instructors pay attention to it from the very first class. Gymnastics requires a wide range of motion, balance, and body awareness. Clothing that bunches, slides, or restricts movement pulls kids out of focus at exactly the wrong moment. Fitted, breathable fabrics let coaches see body alignment clearly, which helps them give accurate feedback and spot skills safely.
Loose or baggy clothing creates real hazards on bars, beams, and vaults. Straps, drawstrings, or dangling fabric can catch on equipment. Tops that ride up during inversions are distracting at best and unsafe at worst. The right fit eliminates these issues entirely so kids can concentrate on learning.
What Kids Should Wear to Gymnastics
Fitted, stretchy clothing that stays in place during flips, rolls, and handstands is the foundation of any good gymnastics outfit.
Leotards
Leotards are the standard for a reason. They provide a sleek, secure fit that moves with the body without shifting during inversions. Made from spandex or lycra blends, leotards give coaches a clear view of posture and form, which supports better skill development. Kids can wear them alone or layer shorts or leggings over the top.
Fitted Shorts or Leggings
Shorts and leggings pair well with a leotard and are a great option for kids who prefer more coverage. Choose fitted, non-restrictive styles made from moisture-wicking fabric. Avoid anything with zippers, buttons, or decorative hardware that could scratch against equipment. Capri-length or ankle-length leggings work well year-round.
Shirts for Boys and Kids Who Prefer Them
Kids who prefer tops over leotards should wear a fitted athletic shirt that can be tucked securely into shorts. Loose shirts that fall forward during bar work or handstands create distraction and reduce a coach’s ability to observe alignment. A tucked-in athletic top solves both problems.
Footwear
Most gymnastics classes are done barefoot or in gymnastics slippers. Bare feet give the best grip on mats and equipment. Gymnastics slippers can provide a bit of extra support for kids who prefer them. Socks with grip soles are acceptable if required, but smooth socks are not recommended on gymnastics surfaces.
What to Avoid
A few common clothing choices create problems in the gym that are easy to prevent. Baggy t-shirts and loose athletic wear slide during inversions and make it hard for coaches to see body position. Jeans, denim of any kind, and clothing with embellishments are not appropriate for gymnastics. Long hair should be secured in a bun or tight ponytail before class starts.
Jewelry, including earrings, necklaces, and bracelets, should be left at home.
What Kids in Gold Medal Ninja Programs Should Wear
Gold Medal Ninja programs have a specific uniform requirement: all ninjas are required to purchase and wear their level shirt to every practice. Level shirts correspond to the Color Level System used throughout the program, from White and Yellow (Beginner) through Purple, Blue, and Green (Intermediate) up to Brown, Red, and Black (Advanced). These shirts make level progression visible and build a strong sense of team identity in the gym. Details are available at the reception desk at any location.
Kids in Ninja Babies or Little Ninja classes should also wear the required level shirt along with fitted athletic shorts or leggings suitable for obstacle course work.
Layering for Warmups and Cool Days
Gyms at Gold Medal Gymnastics & Ninja are fully air-conditioned, which keeps the training environment comfortable year-round. On cooler days, kids can start class in a zip-up athletic jacket or warm-up pants over their leotard and remove the layer before active training begins. Any warm-up layer should come off before kids get on bars, beams, or the trampoline. Loose layers and gymnastics equipment do not mix safely.
Getting Ready Before Class Starts
A few simple habits before class make a real difference in how ready kids are when they step onto the floor. Pack a bag with a water bottle, any hair ties needed, and a change of clothes for after class. Arrive with enough time to use the restroom and get settled before the warm-up begins. Kids who arrive frazzled take longer to focus. Kids who arrive prepared get more out of every minute.
