Top 5 Key Skills Advanced Gymnastics Teaches Your Teen

Advanced gymnastics offers far more than just physical and athletic prowess. Here are five key skills that your tween or teen will learn in advanced gymnastics.

Discipline

People in advanced gymnastics must adhere to a strict training schedule, show up on time, and follow the coach’s instructions. This requires a high level of self-discipline and dedication, which can translate into success in other areas of life, such as academics and relationships. By mastering discipline in the gym, teens can learn to stay focused and committed in all aspects of their lives.

Resilience

Advanced gymnastics fosters resilience and perseverance. People will face challenges and setbacks, such as falling during a routine or not mastering a new skill right away. However, with practice and determination, they can overcome these obstacles and improve their performance. This resilience and ability to push through adversity are valuable skills that will serve teens well in their future endeavors.

Teamwork

Furthermore, advanced gymnastics promotes teamwork and cooperation. While gymnastics is often thought of as an individual sport, athletes also work together in group routines and cheer each other on during competitions. This teaches teens the importance of supporting their teammates and working together toward a common goal. Learning to collaborate with others is a crucial skill that can help teens succeed in school, work, and social situations.

Goal-Setting

Another key skill that teens will learn in advanced gymnastics is goal-setting. Individuals set specific, measurable goals for themselves, such as mastering a new skill or improving their scores in competition. By setting these goals and working diligently to achieve them, your child can develop the habits of self-motivation and perseverance that are essential for success in any endeavor. The sense of accomplishment that comes from reaching these goals can boost your child’s self-esteem.

Time Management

Advanced gymnastics can teach teens valuable time management skills. Individuals must balance training sessions, schoolwork, social activities, and rest to ensure they are at their best for competitions. By learning to prioritize and manage their time effectively, your child will develop strong organizational skills that will benefit them. This ability to juggle multiple responsibilities is a valuable asset that can help teens succeed in college, careers, and personal relationships.

What will my child learn in Advanced Gymnastics?

In advanced gymnastics classes, your child will progress through various levels, including Level 2 and Level 3. Each level introduces more complex skills and techniques, building on the foundation established in previous levels.

Level 2 Gymnastics Skills Overview

In Level 2, your child will learn a variety of fundamental skills across four events: vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. For the vault, they will practice performing a straight jump onto a mat stack. On the uneven bars, they will master the pullover, cast, back hip circle, and single-leg cut. Balance beam skills will include the jump to front support mount, lever, arabesque, and stretch jump dismount. In floor exercise, they will work on the handstand, cartwheel, backward roll, forward roll, split leap, and turns. These skills collectively help build a strong foundation for more advanced gymnastics.

Level 3 Gymnastics Skills Overview

Level 3 builds upon the foundational skills developed in Level 2, introducing more complex movements and combinations across the four events. In vault, your child will perform a handstand flatback onto a mat stack. On the uneven bars, they will practice glide swings, pullovers, casts, back hip circles, and sole circle dismounts. Balance beam routines will include the jump to front support mount, arabesque (45°), lever to beam, handstand, split jump (30°), straight jump, and cartwheel to side handstand dismount. For floor exercise, they will work on the handstand forward roll, backward roll to push-up position, split jump (60°), stretch jump, round-off, and handstand to bridge kickover. These skills introduce greater complexity and require enhanced strength, flexibility, and coordination.
