Gymnastics, although rewarding, is a physically demanding sport. In order to improve in the fundamentals, you will have to improve the different aspects of your body and mind. One of the main things that you will need to develop to go far in the sport of gymnastics is your flexibility. Doing so will allow you to maneuver your body in ways that you never have before. With that being said, here is how you can get flexible for gymnastics!

Start out Small
Working on your flexibility is going to be a timely process. You are not going to be able to do the splits your first day and that is okay. What is important is that you start working on and developing what you can do. Repeating this process every day for an extended period of time will push you further and further along to your goal until stretches that were once difficult are now a breeze to perform.
Make sure You are Hitting Every Muscle Group
A great gymnast works all areas of their body. You need to focus on your whole body’s flexibility and not just one specific area. Make sure that you are hitting every muscle group equally so you have a well-rounded development. There are many movements in gymnastics that use your whole body to perform them. Because of this, it is imperative that your body is able to keep up and work together as one.
Turn Gymnastics Stretching Into a Routine
As mentioned before, flexibility is something that takes time to master. It gets easier every day. However, it is something that you have to keep doing to see any real progress. Finding a routine that works best for you and sticking to it is a trait of any good gymnast. Pick out a time in the morning or the evening when you are free and devote 15-30 minutes to stretching. You can do this while watching TV or listening to music just make sure that you are getting it done. Turn it into a habit and you will be well on your way to reaching the flexibility you need for gymnastics.
